The band is very proud of our ex-player Sophie Stones. Sophie joined the band on flugel at the end of 2021, having previously played trumpet in Hull Philharmonic and Slaithwaite Philharmonic orchestras. She is also a talented singer and sang soprano with Huddersfield Choral Society, but brass bands were a new venture. She did however soon make the flugel seat her own, often being a featured soloist in the band’s concerts.
in 2023 Sophie decided that she wanted to make music her career and of course one of the best ways to do this is to become a military musician. She flew through the rigorous application process and following initial military training, in January 2025 was assigned to the esteemed Coldstream Guards
Having already participated in massive military events this year such as the Trooping of The Colour, Sophie played a key role in this year’s Remembrance weekend. Firstly, she was part of the fanfare trumpet team at the Royal Albert Hall Festival of Remembrance. Whilst performing in this this prestigious event she rubbed shoulders with some of the stars of the show such as Rod Stewart and Hannah Waddingham. On Remembrance Sunday itself Sophie was part of the massed bands of the Household Division who played for the service at the Cenotaph.
The world is now Sophie’s oyster; and we are looking forward to seeing her participating in many more exciting musical events in the future. She is undoubtedly an excellent role model for any young player who is considering a career as a musician
